The Cathedral of Norwich has always been a point of reference for the city, a spiritual meeting place as well as a location with a sense of community. As early as the 1970s this complex was one of the first in England to provide a well-equipped visitors centre. However, it was only in the 1990s albeit with very simple structures that functioned as shops, an exposition area and café that the cathedral definitively opened up to the public and thereby also became an important gathering place. The fact that two of the four sides of the large two-storey cloister were missing, except for a few traces of the walls, meant that the complex lacked the unity and compactness that distinguishes similar grand architecture of the Middle Ages.
