Due, among other things, to the continuous regulations’ audit, the whole building process has recently undergone a real revolution, becoming fertile ground for experiment and set up new building materials and techniques equipped with high-performance, reduced thicknesses and dimensions and unconventional features to properly address the encountered needs. If a while ago, building materials were selected on the basis of their performance, economic, formal and aesthetic features – accepting limits and criticalities – starting from the 21st century – even thanks to the spread of hi-tech materials with high performance and aesthetic quality (such as glass and steel) as well as the possibilities offered by CAD and CAM systems, that allow forms and applications previously unthinkable – the relationship between materials’ science, engineering and architecture has become increasingly dire, giving birth to a new generation of innovative materials with noteworthy performance, the so called Smart Materials.

Sospinto anche dalla continua revisione normativa, l’intero processo edilizio ha recentemente subito una vera e propria rivoluzione divenendo terreno nel quale dare adito a sperimentazioni rivolte alla messa a punto di materiali e tecniche dotati di prestazioni elevate, spessori e dimensioni ridotti al minimo e caratteristiche non convenzionali, con lo scopo di fronteggiare in maniera adeguata le esigenze sopraggiunte. Se un tempo i materiali da costruzione venivano selezionati in base alle loro caratteristiche prestazionali, economiche, formali ed estetiche – accettandone limiti e criticità – a partire dal XXI secolo – grazie anche alla diffusione di materiali hi-tech, dalle caratteristiche prestazionali ed estetiche elevatissime (come ad esempio vetro e acciaio), oltre che alle possibilità offerte da sistemi CAD/CAM che consentono forme ed applicazioni precedentemente impensabili – il rapporto fra scienza dei materiali, ingegneria e architettura è divenuto sempre più stretto, generando nuovi materiali innovativi dotati di prestazioni non comuni, i cosiddetti Smart Materials.
