Tra matematica e fisica. François Jacquier in Italia e le sue Institutiones philosophicae

François Jacquier (1711-1788), known as a editor of Newton's Principia (Geneva 1739-42) with Thomas Le Seur, spent almost all his scientific life in Italy. He was author of several works, as a teacher and as an expert in hydraulics and hydrodynamics. Among them are a considerable Treatise of integral calculus (1768), for the education of the Prince of Parma, and a philosophical Course (Institutiones philosophicae) for Colleges and Seminaries, in which the teaching of mathematics is considered a prerequisite to that of physics.

L'attività scientifica di Jacquier, che fu anche il primo editore europeo dei Principia mathematica di Newton, in Italia per diversi decenni. Sue ricerche riguardanti le regolazione dei fiumi, la stabilità della cupola di San Pietro. Le sue Institutiones Philosophicae rappresentano un manuale di matematica e di fisica newtoniana in uso nei collegi e nei seminari che propone in modo pionieristico la propedeuticità degli insegnamenti matematici rispetto a quelli di fisica.
