The aim of this special issue is to present and to discuss various aspects of interlingual subtitling, as a form of audiovisual translation, in theory and practice. It is published in two parts, trans-kom, volume 9, issues [1] and [2], 2016. In this edition, the first paper deals with the role of subtitles in multilingual films (into German and Italian), taking various strategies into account. The second paper investigates the importance of suprasegmentals in conversation considering their culture- bound significance; it shows how easily misinterpretation can occur due to a lack of attention to these features. The third paper starts from the competences required to subtitle effectively. It proposes a model for teaching subtitling in a translation course with regard to related linguistic, textual and technical factors. The last paper focuses attention on the importance of reception studies, reporting on data gathered at major Italian film festivals with the aim of evaluating audience reception of subtitled films. The second part of this special issue will be published in trans-kom, volume 9, issue [2], 2016.
