The “fusionism” was an attempt to reform the teaching of elementary geometry involving the Italian school (after the French, German and Danish ones) in the last decades of the 1800s and the early 1900s. It intended to introduce plane and solid geometry at the same time, inferring the theorems in plane from space analogs and linking to researches on the foundations of elementary geometry. The treaties that have marked this evolution are the ones by De Paolis (1884) and Lazzeri and Bassani (1891). At the base of the fusionist setting up an important theoretical role was represented by the Desargues's theorem, brought to light by Peano and Hilbert. Mathesis was deeply involved in the debate over the opportunity to reform school curricula in a fusionist perspective.
