The article offers a comprehensive analysys of Adam Smith's dynamic view of technological change along four dimendions: (i) evolution of the division of labour and capital accumulation (ii) division of labour and the extent of the market (iiii) division of labour, institutions and human nature (iv) the "dark side" of the division of labour. It is shown that the interaction between division of labour, institutions, , market size and capital accumulation outlines a distincitve interpretative framework of the market economy dynamics. In particular, it is highlighted how the evolution of the division of labour introduces irreversible social changes up to the point where Smith eventually wonders about the future of the "commercial society" revealing a surprising and unexpected pessimis.
