Recent climate change and protections of the glacier by geotextiles: the experience of Presena glacier (Adamello – Presanella massif, western Trentino Italy). Aims of this research is to characterize meteorological conditions at the surface of Glacier Presena and their recent developments and the understanding of the real effectiveness of covering with geotextiles a portion of the glacier of approximately 58,000 square meters. In the last décade, some glaciological and snow measurements campaign were carried out on this glacier used also for summer skiing. The climatic analysis shows a very intense heating of the area, about 1°C mean annual temperature during the last thirty years. The snow data show a tendency to an increase in seasonal cumulative amounts only partially balanced by the reduction in size and volume of glaciers in the area and most likely caused also by anthropogenic forcing. The use of geotextiles allowed to retain approximately 60% of the seasonal snow and preserve more than 50% of equivalent water. A possible extension of the protected area will allow, in the near future as to mitigate the relentless process of reduction of the glaciated area — important tourist attraction in the region
