The paper introduces the aims and the result of the Cost Action TU0701, coordinated by R. Di Giulio, launched at the beginning of the 2008. The Action has been active for four years, with the main objective being the development and dissemination of knowledge and tools to assess and promote strategies for the improvement of suburban building stock. More than 60 researchers, from 22 different countries, have investigated and compared common experiences concerning policies and plans for renovation and revitalization of suburban housing settlements. In particular the main focus of the Action has been on methods, procedures and technologies which address the regeneration of the existing buildings. Regeneration is especially important in view of increasing the value of the suburban building stock for the improvement of the quality of public spaces and services, therefore resulting in improved safety and a better quality of life of the inhabitants.
