During the May 20, 2012 Emilia earthquake sequence a number of masonry chimneys were damaged and subsequently demolished. The paper discusses in detail the case of the chimney located at the School of Engineering of the University of Ferrara, built at the beginning of the 20th century in the service of a sugar factory. The chimney, 50m tall, suffered from severe damages. namely, a large diagonal crack appeared at a height of approximately 45 m. For safety reasons, the structure was shortened by 12 m. Shown and critically compared in the paper are the results of the numerous analyses performed: linear static and modal analyses, traditional pushover analyses, modal pushover analysis and nonlinear response history analysis.

Abstract
During the May 20, 2012 Emilia earthquake sequence a number of masonry chimneys were damaged and subsequently demolished. The paper discusses in detail the case of the chimney located at the School of Engineering of the University of Ferrara, built at the beginning of the 20th century in the service of a sugar factory. The chimney, 50m tall, suffered from severe damages. namely, a large diagonal crack appeared at a height of approximately 45 m. For safety reasons, the structure was shortened by 12 m. Shown and critically compared in the paper are the results of the numerous analyses performed: linear static and modal analyses, traditional pushover analyses, modal pushover analysis and nonlinear response history analysis.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
