The main evidence emerging from a simple overview of the eurostat data on firms’ innovation strategies is a remarkable backwardness of the Italian production system. On the side of techno-organisational changes, training and environmental innovation, the Italian firms show a worse performance than their counterparts located in other comparable European countries (Germany, France and United Kingdom). Although this overview is less than explorative, the general conclusion is that the dynamic of innovation for Italian firms has been deteriorating for two decades and this contributes to explain part of the productivity decline in Italy
