We discuss structural transformations in clusters, on the basis of both a review of the literature and the analysis of two specific cases of clusters located in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy, namely the biomedical cluster of Mirandola and the ceramics cluster of Sassuolo. We outline evolutionary trends in the structural changes arising in clusters as a result of globalisation and technical progress.
