Ancient structures are important elements of the Italian cultural heritage and their safeguard cannot be ignored. A complete monitoring of these buildings may require a mix of contact and contactless surveying techniques, like: accelerometers, crack gauges, precise digital levelling [Pellegrinelli A. et. al., 2013], Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Digital Photogrammetry [Park H.S.et. al., 2007; Guarnieri A. et. al., 2013], infrared thermography and so on. The paper regards the monitoring of the bastion of “Sant’Antonio”, a defensive fortifi cation of the ancient walls of the town of Ferrara (Italy). The bastion is a big and manifold structure, made of several elements, as outer masonry, interior counterfort walls and embankments. In December 2011, due to the presence of signifi cant cracks in masonry, was set up a simple monitoring system based on mechanical crack gauges placed across two principal cracks. In consequence of two earthquakes occurred in May 2012 [Scognamiglio L. et. al, 2012], which seriously damaged Ferrara and the surrounding area, the cracks visibly increased. Therefore a more complex monitoring system, based on the integration of various surveying techniques and mechanical crack gauges, was realized in order to characterize the kinematic behavior of the whole bastion. This paper presents in detail such system and the results obtained from the fi rst surveys.

Abstract
This paper presents in detail such system and the results obtained from the fi rst surveys.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
