The recommendation on Historic Urban Landscapes (HUL) approved by the General Assembly the 10th of November 2011 sets a new comprehensive conceptual framework for the conservation of historic cities. It leads towards an increasing need to take into consideration the physical aspects and spaces of the urban fabric as well as the multiple concepts and attributes that are connected to the notion of “heritage value”. The HUL approach is a broad conceptual framework for integrated urban conservation policies, which recognises and integrates the methodological and operational achievements in heritage conservation of the past decades, but also shows the way for a further evolution of the planning strategies and practices.
