Between February 2004 and August 2005 the restoration and renovation of the Fondazione della Cassa dei Risparmi building in Forlì (ex-Monte di Pietà) have been carried out. During the excavations several drainage ditches (“pozzi di butto”), containing slags and waste products of the workshops localised in this area of the city, have been recovered. In particular, several metallic artifacts have been examined in order to identify the technological innovations introduced by the medieval artisans. Macroscopic analyses have been performed to evaluate the morphology and the state of conservation. In order to correlate the microstructure with the production activities of the medieval workshops, optical microscopy (OM) and Vickers microhardness tests have been used. Chemical analyses have been performed by means of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), equipped with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) microprobe, in order to verify the metal phases observed in each artefact.
