Polyamines (PA) -putrescine(PUT), spermidine(SPD), spermine(SPM)- and Ornithine Decarboxylase(ODC), the first enzyme of their biosynthetic pathway ,are widely considered as tumor markers. However their role in non-malignant colon polyps is still discussed. We determined the levels of both PA and ODC in patient s affected by colon polyposis in relation to different histologic type (tubular, tubulovillous)and to the dysplasia degree . 20 nonconsecutive unselected patient s who underwent colonoscopy were admitted to the study. giving informed consent, whenever polyps have been evidenced . 10 subjects with suspected colon disease but unconfirmed were used as controls . As previous ly reported ODC is significantly increased in the group with higher dysplasia. In the same group total PA and PUT are significantly higher than controls. However the SPD/PUT ratio would be preferred because of his higher sensitivity to both histological type and dysplasia degree.
