In many industries, firms are currently facing a difficult trade-off. On the one hand, they have to quickly adapt to fast and unpredictable technological and market changes through innovation, new ideas and new knowledge. On the other hand, they need to preserve traditional competencies and skills that are still crucial for competitiveness and, at the same time, hard to replicate.
