The electrochemical behavior of the europium(III)/europium(II) redox couple has been investigated at both hydrophobic and hydrophilic boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. The obtained results have been inserted in a depiction comprising other model redox equlibria, i.e. iron(III)/iron(II), ferri/ferro-cyanide and cerium(IV)/ cerium(III). From the measurements carried out at different temperature, information on the role of the hydrophilicity of the BDD surface has been obtained. While the iron-containing redox couples have a standard reduction potential localized in the middle of the window of BDD’s ideal polarization, in the case of europium and cerium, the electron transfer takes place at very negative and positive potential, respectively. In these cases, the role of surface hydrophilicity is very modest, as a possible result of a high polarization.
