The essay reevaluates the literary experimentalism, cultural work, and continuing relevance of Sutton E. Griggs’s last novel, _Pointing the Way_ (1908). Griggs inserted _Pointing the Way_ within the tradition of American speculative fiction through a multiplicity of intertextual references. The essay offers the first in-depth examination of these intertextual references, foregrounding Griggs’ dialogue with Charles W. Chesnutt and his revision of widely influential contemporaneous mainstream works of speculative fiction by Edward Bellamy and Ignatius Donnelly.
