The essay makes use of data collected by a small team (Giola, Giunti, Mecca, Tonello, Trovato, Volpi and others), which is collating the witnesses of the Commedia according to the method of loci critici. Among over 350 manuscripts hitherto analyzed, 53 (about 15%) are contaminated by juxtaposition of exemplars. Due to the numerousness of the tradition, it is likely that similar percentages also characterize the tradition of other texts comparable in size and number of copies with the Commedia.
