The sustainable retrofit of the existing building heritage has become, lately, a leading theme in architecture. In this sector, technology innovation acquires primary importance regarding architectural application. The paper shows the potential of innovative methods in relation to an energy retrofit proposal for an office building located in Ferrara, Italy. The office complex, left to decay since late ‘80s, requires a deep environmental intervention at the urban scale, in order ease the approach to the major action of technological refurbishment The main issue investigated by the present study is the design of a new building envelope with active and passive function. In particular, the projects analyses the potential of semitransparent photovoltaic devices, an interesting technology thanks to its high quality of architectural integration. The results confirm the remarkable benefits gained thanks to the retrofit action.
