We investigate theoretically and experimentally the nonlinear propagation of optical dark beams in the regime of weak diffraction, with emphasis on the onset of shock waves characterized by dispersive (oscillatory) regularization of the fronts. Experiments are performed in dye solutions exhibiting nonlinearity of thermal origin, and the results are successfully described in the framework of the scalar paraxial equation with nonlinear response.

Abstract
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the nonlinear propagation of optical dark beams in the regime of weak diffraction, with emphasis on the onset of shock waves characterized by dispersive (oscillatory) regularization of the fronts. Experiments are performed in dye solutions exhibiting nonlinearity of thermal origin, and the results are successfully described in the framework of the scalar paraxial equation with nonlinear response.File in questo prodotto:
