PEMF in individual joints can be used to stimulate the whole cartilage surface and thickness, and the underling subchondral bone to control inflammation, stimulate chondrocyte anabolic activity, prevent articular cartilage degeneration and favour patients functional recovery. Clinical studies in humans show that PEMF stimulation has beneficial effects in patients after arthroscopic surgery for cartilage lesions with joint inflammatory processes. It is well reported the positive effects of PEMFs on cartilage and bone diseases suggesting a PEMF potential role on ligand-receptor interaction. Excellent reviews about the various effects of PEMFs on cell biology show a plethora of possible effects. PEMFs interaction with biological tissue might occur outside the plasma membrane and/or with trans-membrane proteins.
