Diagnosis of periodontal diseases is based on the collection of several clinical parameters by the use of a periodontal probe. This simple instrument allows to get precise measurement of both mineralized and non-mineralized tissues destruction caused by ongoing periodontal disease. This paper describes the most important clinical parameters in periodontics, explaining their diagnostic value as well as their method of assessment and the correspondent symbol on periodontal record file. Evaluation of clinical features, diagnosis and treatment plan require any sign of gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction to be detected and recorded. The parameters described in this paper were introduced more than 50 years ago but still remain the fundamentals of a correct diagnosis.

Abstract
Diagnosis of periodontal diseases is based on the collection of several clinical parameters by the use of a periodontal probe. This simple instrument allows to get precise measurement of both mineralized and non-mineralized tissues destruction caused by ongoing periodontal disease. This paper describes the most important clinical parameters in periodontics, explaining their diagnostic value as well as their method of assessment and the correspondent symbol on periodontal record file. Evaluation of clinical features, diagnosis and treatment plan require any sign of gingival inflammation and periodontal destruction to be detected and recorded. The parameters described in this paper were introduced more than 50 years ago but still remain the fundamentals of a correct diagnosis.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
