The recent focus on increasing buildings energy-efficiency seems to develop completely new methodological scenarios. However, it is not taken into account the past experience, represented by ancient skills and expertise which are strongly established and completely respectful of climatic contests and local materials availability. Therefore, the first step toward a sustainable project is to achieve the knowledge and to perform an update and a review of those rules and methodologies. These particularly influence the indoor environmental quality of buildings in Mediterranean areas, overall regarding thermohygrometric summer conditions. New design tools, improvements to what we could utilize in past, include selective glazing facades, innovative insulating materials, virtual performance simulations and control of the final result through on-site monitoring.
