The chapter deals with the debate about the origins of language, a topic that is now arousing conspicuous attention in linguistics as well as other scientific fields. Although the hottest dispute is between innatist and anti-innatist viewpoints, a variety of positions also characterises the biolinguistic framework. In this perspective, the debate is between the adaptationist and the exaptationist views of language evolution.
