The author sketches the European intervention in the field of social security legislation underlining the lean competence of the Union, except the social security of migrant workers, and recently also of citizens moving in Member States, provided for by Regulations and Directives. Even if the competence is poor, a number of different legal sources have been produced and the essay takes a glance at soft, hard and case law on the topic. In the following paragraph the situation in the twelve new Member States is briefly dealt with, on the basis of official Union documents. A conclusive reflection is devoted to problematic issues about the evolution of the European social security
