In recent years the usage of Beach Drainage Systems (BDS) has started to be considered an effective method of coastal protection even if it is still to be proved to what extent they are effective in stabilizing the beach or generate accretion. A case study site at the mouth of the Uniti River in the northern Adriatic sea (Italy) was chosen to assess the beach response to the operation of the system. The system was installed on behalf of ENI (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi), to provide information to local and regional authorities on the feasibility of such a solution for stabilization of beaches. The BDS became fully operational on March 2005 and it is still working at the time of writing. The beach volume in presence of BDS shows a steady increase since the beginning of the monitoring period and reflects some seasonal variability during 2005-2006. The variability is still present in 2007-2008 but the accretion trend is dominant.
