In order to determine the efficiency of some organic compounds as bronze corrosion inhibitors, a series of endurance tests was carried out on two different alloys. The bronze surface, both clean and yet artificially patinated, were prefilmed by immersion in very dilute solutions of the organic substances and exposed to the action of aggressive environments, including SO2 and H2S. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to evaluate the possibility of using the tested inhibitors in surface treatments on both ancient and modern artistic bronzes to provide protection from atmospheric corrosion.

Abstract

In order to determine the efficiency of some organic compounds as bronze corrosion inhibitors, a series of endurance tests was carried out on two different alloys. The bronze surface, both clean and yet artificially patinated, were prefilmed by immersion in very dilute solutions of the organic substances and exposed to the action of aggressive environments, including SO2 and H2S. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to evaluate the possibility of using the tested inhibitors in surface treatments on both ancient and modern artistic bronzes to provide protection from atmospheric corrosion.
