Objectives: In the present research, we studied paired serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 21 consecutive patients affected by symptomatic neurosyphilis (17 males and 4 females; mean age = 58.2±8.9). In all subjects, serum and CSF specimens were assayed for FTA, TPHA, RPR card test, albumin and IgG levels. We also carried out a quantitative (IgG Index) and qualitative (detection of Oligoclonal Bands - OB - by Isoelectric Focusing and Immunoblotting) determination of an intrathecal IgG synthesis and a Blood-CSF Barrier (BCB) dysfunction. Moreover, a chemical-physical analysis was performed for all CSF samples. Results: FTA was positive in all serum specimens (100%), whereas we remarked a CSF response in 80.9%. Lower values were observed for TPHA and RPR card test. A pleocytosis was seen in one case, while an increased concentration of CSF proteins was documented in 9 patients (42.8%). IgG Index > 0.70 was noticed in 6 subjects (28.6%); we detected OB in 9 (42.8%) and a 'mir...
