Changes in age at menopause and length of reproductive span were investigated by retrospective method in a sample of Italian women born between 1846 and 1930 and living in urban environment (Bologna) and rural one (Imola and Castel Bolognese). An increase in age at menopause and a lengthening in reproductive period were noticed in both environments during the over 80 years period considered. However the phgenomenon has been more intense in country than in town, probably because of the more intense changes in life conditions in country than in town.
