We consider the motion of a particle subjected to a general rheonomic contraint, discussing the conservation conditions of the mechanical energy and of the Langrangian energy from the Lagrangian point of view. We generalize the results obtained in an article recently published in this journal (de Castro A S 2000 Eur. J. Phys. 21 23-26).
