We prove that the Cauchy problem for an nxn system of strictly hyperbolic conservation laws in one space dimension admits a weak global solution also in presence of sonic phase boundaries. Applications to Chapman-Jouguet detonations, liquid-vapor transitions and elastodynamics are considered.
