Recent advances bconcerning the processing and physico-chemical properties of ceramic pigments are reviewed, focusing on innovative technologies and crystalline structures no formely proposed for colouring ceramic wares. In particular, new insights into the coloruring mechanisms are outlined and the design, cheracterization and use of new pigments discussed. The unconventional processes applied to pigment production have been surveyed, considering both new synthesis routes (continous firing, mocrowave, mechanosynthesis, etc.) and innovative ways of mixing precursors (sol-gel, coprecipitation, Pechini, etc.).
