The paper deals with the nature of phenomena known as vocalic syncope and epenthesis. Data from Italian dialects of Romagna are here analysed in the theoretical framework of 'phonological empty structure' and that certain kind of vowel alternation are explained as the effect of the interaction of parameters concerning syllable structure.
