The corrosion behaviour of OFHC copper, pre-treated in hydro-alcoholic solutions of various silane compounds, was evaluated in 0.6M NaCl. The silane compounds tested as filming agents were: n-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (PropS), 3-mercapto-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (PropS-SH), 3-amine-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (PropS-NH2) and n-octadecyl-trimethoxysilane (OctadecS). The influence of the silane molecule structure, silane solution pH and pretreatment time towards the protective effects of the formed coatings was determined by Linear Polarization Resistance, potentiodynamic Polarization Curves, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. Particularly efficient was the introduction of the thiol group in the PropS molecule. In the case of the most efficient filming treatments (PropS-SH or OctadecS, at pH 4) the evolution of their inhibitive effects was also studied during long testing time.
