This research was inspired by work conducted between 1995 and 1998 on astronomical knowledge possessed and used in Cistercian monastic building sites during the Bernardine age (1120-1153). The significant results achieved by analysing some abbeys stimulated the desire to check whether such problems existed and persisted over the centuries also in urban monastic foundations. This research was intended to study the plan of some old religious buildings in Bologna with reference to the progress of urban fabric. The part of my paper presented here is on interpreting Bologna during the Roman era, putting forward hypotheses on its foundation matrices.

Abstract
This research was inspired by work conducted between 1995 and 1998 on astronomical knowledge possessed and used in Cistercian monastic building sites during the Bernardine age (1120-1153). The significant results achieved by analysing some abbeys stimulated the desire to check whether such problems existed and persisted over the centuries also in urban monastic foundations. This research was intended to study the plan of some old religious buildings in Bologna with reference to the progress of urban fabric. The part of my paper presented here is on interpreting Bologna during the Roman era, putting forward hypotheses on its foundation matrices.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
