C. pneumoniae infection should be included in the differential diagnosis of meningoencephalitis, even if there are not associated respiratory symptoms. Of interest, the high quote of PCR positivity for Hsp-70 gene (a primary immunogen which elicits the inflammatory response during chlamydial disease) in these patients and previously demonstrated in MS disease (Contini et al., Multiple Sclerosis, in press) may be interpreted as a part of a stress response which can trigger an autoimmune reactivity. Studies to quantitate relative transcript levels of HsP 70 over time by RT-PCR are in progress. (Grants of MIUR, CARICE and CARIFE Foundations 2004).

Abstract
C. pneumoniae infection should be included in the differential diagnosis of meningoencephalitis, even if there are not associated respiratory symptoms.
