The research supports the assumption that the language skills are interrelated and shows that a significant increase in the overall rate of learning can be achieved by acknowledging the primordial role of correct sound recognition. Specifically, acoustic training with the Sound Perception Trainer (SPT) compares more than favorably with results from conventional training methods in the language laboratory. The research was carried out in the Audio-Lingua Project and received financial support from the European Union through the Lingua/Socrates Program.
