Casting alloys are widely used (some 57%) in the transportation industry, mainly in the automotive industry because the vehicles become lighter and burn less fuel. As concerns aluminium for castings, approx. 61% is used for diecastings, 36% for chill castings and 3% for sand castings. While wrought alloys are almost exclusively obtained from primary aluminium, some 85% of foundry alloys are of secondary origin, i.e., from metal remelting. Today’s refining and purifying technologies yield top-grade materials; therefore, the traditional distinction between primary and secondary metal no longer applies. Most recycled aluminium is used to make ingots for remelting, generally based on the aluminium-silicon system with such additives as copper and magnesium. This chapter contains the classification and characteristics of aluminium casting alloys and data sheets for those alloys that are more frequently used in the automotive industry for engine blocks, cylinder heads, pistons, gearboxes and differential boxes, wheel rims, etc.

Abstract
This chapter contains the classification and characteristics of aluminium casting alloys and data sheets for those alloys that are more frequently used in the automotive industry for engine blocks, cylinder heads, pistons, gearboxes and differential boxes, wheel rims, etc.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
