The objective of this research was to describe trends in diarrhea-associated hospitalizations in children of the salento (Italy). Specifically, the study evaluated the rate of infections caused by rotavirus and the G.genotypes circulating in the period 2004-2005. The study included the data on hospitalizations for enteritis and the gathering of stool samples collected from children hospidalized in the Pediatric wards of seven Hospitals in the Province of Lecce. During 2004-2005, 16333 childrenwere hospidalized;1965 of them had gastro-enteric symptoms and 403 patients were positive for rotavirus. A total 170 stool samples were detected rotavirus positive by RT.PCR and 89 were sequence analysed and classified into G1, G2, G4, G9 and G12 type. On the basic of the data gathered in this study, the cases of rotavirus infection seem to represent an important cause of hospidalization for the acute gastroenteritis in the salento. This study, moreover, documents significant genetic heterogeneity of rotavirus in the hospitals
