The project will have the following objectives: 1. studying and understanding of the dynamic behaviour of particulate air pollution and identifying accurate models for the physical processes involved. 2. development of stable and accurate discretization in space and time of particulate air pollution models based on kinetic or Boltzmann-type formulations. 3. investigation of the behaviour of the systems and their discretizations in the limit of macroscopic and/or large-scale models and derivation of numerical methods for such macroscopic models. 4. implementation and testing of the algorithms/numerical methods on carefully selected benchmark problems to evaluate their performance on realistic environmental problems. This research allows PhD students to enter an important field of research such as environmental modelling. Some simple problems will also be extended indirectly to MSc or honours students for their projects. In such a direction the South African partner can benefit of the experience in the field of the Italian team.
