Rationale: We have demonstrated that A2A receptor number and function are aberrantly increased in the circulating cells of subjects carrying the nutant gene compared to control healthy individuals (Varani et al., Faseb J., 2001). Objectives: This project is part of a more global aim of the proponents to identify predictive biological markers for HD. In this project we plan to extend our initial data demonstrating the presence of an aberrant A2A receptor phenotype in a total of 39 HD patients (Varani et al., Faseb J., 2003) to a larger cohort of well characterized patients, with the aim of establishing, at the end of three years grant, whether the A2A receptor can be utilized as an indicator of clinical evolution in HD.
