One aim of the papers of Stefano Benvenuti has been to reduce the gap between known sufficient conditions for the well posedness, e.g. symmetrizability of characteristic matrix, and necessary conditions, such as weak hyperbolicity. In his papers Benvenuti Benvenuti has given several necessary conditions for well posedness of the Cauchy problem for a class of first order, hyperbolic systems with multiple characteristics.
