The key role of environmental colloids in aquatic and atmospheric chemistry makes the characterization of these real samples a relevant topic for environmental studies on pollutant transport or their accumulation (i.e. in soils), widely depending on the degree of colloid mobility. In the present work Electrothermal Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (ETAAS) is coupled to Sedimentation Field-Flow Fractionation (SdFFF), a mass based particle separation technique of high resolution, as on-line detection system for an integrated dimensional and elemental characterization of aquatic colloids and aerosols. For enhancing the sensitivity of the analytical approach the on-line ETAAS-SdFFF coupling is performed through a pre-concentration device - Capillary Injection Device (CID) - which allows the direct introduction of the analytical solution into the graphite furnace to an extent of some ten milliliters, providing an in-situ preconcentration. The coupled SdFFF-CID-ETAAS technique allows the determine of major, minor and trace elements, on different size range colloidal fractions, in the SdFFF eluate.
