The decorative and architectural terracottas of Ferrara have been closely connected to the appearance of the town since the 13th century AD. The close relationship between the territory and the resources it provides, such as variety of clays, determinated the preferential use of bricks and tiles and the consequent consolidation of its manifacturing techniques. Terracotta is used as both structural and decorative material; therefore Ferrara represents an example of the building art typical of the Po valley, which is characterised by plastered brick masonry and the very varied use of terracottas for important architectural elements.

Abstract

The decorative and architectural terracottas of Ferrara have been closely connected to the appearance of the town since the 13th century AD. The close relationship between the territory and the resources it provides, such as variety of clays, determinated the preferential use of bricks and tiles and the consequent consolidation of its manifacturing techniques. Terracotta is used as both structural and decorative material; therefore Ferrara represents an example of the building art typical of the Po valley, which is characterised by plastered brick masonry and the very varied use of terracottas for important architectural elements.
