Abstract

In the years 1760-80 many works in the German language came out on actuarial issues, and many insurance institutions for public assistance were founded, like those institutes in the German regions of Hannover, Berlin, and Gotha, as well as in Denmark, to ensure a pension for widows and orphans. Euler and Lagrange were both engaged in a project of a public fund for widows, set up by the Prussian state. This institution was to guarantee a life annuity for widows, since the husband paid in an initial capital and then an annual premium during his life.
