An extended variational formulation is presented for the case of generalized eigenvalue problems for formally symmetric linear operators; in this way a convivent foundation for finite element models is provided. The paradigmatic case of Beck's cantilever is discussed in detail: it is shown that the stability analysis can be carried out by solving a generalized algebric eigenvalue problem, with symmetric matrice. Numerical result are also reported
