We evaluated serum Erythropoietin (Ep), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Ht) during prolonged and strenuous exercis. The blood samples were collected fron 18 long-distance runnersand from 11 cross-country skiers, before and after a competition. Hb and Ht values decreased more in runners than in skiers, probably due to the footstrike hemolysis mechanism, stimulating kidney Ep overproduction.
