The inhibition of Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of AISI 316S stainless steel (SS) in 2 N HCl solution by aromatic and heterocyclic substances has been studied. The evaluation of the inhibitors in reducing SCC of U-bend SS specimens has been carried out by micrographic measurements. The registration of anodic and cathodic polarization curves shows that the inhibiting action towards SCC is related to the effects the organic compounds exert on the anodic dissolution process of the alloys. An interpretation of SCC in HCl solution is hypothesized involving an adsorbed layer of chloride ions. Tests performed with scratched electrodes seem to confirm the proposed interpretation.
