The conference was addressed to researchers working on the Mesolithic, especially in the area extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and the Danube Basin, with the Alps representing its core region (Fontana et al. 2016a; 2016b). It was thus aimed at encouraging discussion within an area—the central and south-western regions of Europe—where the debate on the Mesolithic has never been as developed as in the northern part of the continent. The focus of the conference was the reconstruction of different aspects of the daily life of the last prehistoric hunter-gatherers with an emphasis on adaptation dynamics to different environments both from a synchronic and diachronic viewpoint and on the role played by the Alps in facilitating and hindering contacts and cultural exchanges.
